Alexandre Guilmant

Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911) – Aspects to Life and Work
French organist and composer Alexandre Guilmant, along with César Franck and Charles-Marie Widor, is considered as an organist who not only revived the art of organ playing and organ compositon in the 19th century in France, but established an entire new „school“, the „Symphonic French Organ School“. His extensive compositional work enjoyed great popularity in churches and concert halls during his lifetime, but was soon forgotten shortly after his death.

Organ building at the beginning of the last century created many technical innovations, the harmony of the then young generation of French composers became bolder, and the technical requirements for playing had also become more demanding. Only a few decades ago, the organ world rediscovered the organ music of Guilmant, as a master whose fame and his oeuvre lagged behind the technically more effective and musically advanced works of the following generations of organists and were maneuvered offside by the influence of the neo-classical “Organ Movement” between 1930 and 1980.

122nd publication of the "Gesellschaft der Orgelfreunde e.V."; with a harmonic analysis of the eight organ sonatas and a complete catalog of his works.
